How a cone necker sits on a bottle
A cone necker starts as a flat, curved blank. When you bring the two ends together, it forms a short cone that slides down the neck.
The narrow top hugs the neck, and the wide bottom rests on the bottle's shoulder. Gravity holds it in place, so there is no glue on the bottle.
Because it wraps the full neck, your print shows from the front, back and both sides. A flat necker only shows one face at a time.
This makes cone neckers a good choice for bottles that sit on open shelves, market tables or counters. Shoppers walk past from different angles, and the collar faces all of them.
Bottles that suit a cone collar
Cone neckers need a bottle with a clear shoulder for the collar to rest on. Long, narrow necks with a sloped shoulder work best.
Square bottles with a round neck can work too, as long as the shoulder is flat enough to hold the collar. Very short necks leave little room, so we check those on the proof.
Our wider range of custom bottle necker styles covers bottles with no shoulder at all.
- Olive oil and infused oil bottles
- Maple syrup and specialty syrup bottles
- Hot sauce and vinegar bottles
- Cold brew coffee and juice bottles
- Essential oil and room diffuser bottles
- Glass soda and sparkling water bottles
Measuring your bottle, including unusual shapes
A cone necker is only as good as its fit. We need three measurements, taken from the actual bottle, not a spec sheet.
If the cap is wider than the neck, measure the cap too. The top opening must pass over it.
Measure two or three bottles from the same batch. Glass bottles can vary slightly, and the template should suit the widest one.
Some bottles have a short neck, a very steep shoulder or a wide cap. These can still work, but the template needs extra care.
If you are unsure, talk to our packaging team directly by phone or WhatsApp at (503) 461-4788. You can also email info@thehangtags.com with a photo of the bottle.
- Measure the neck diameter just below the cap with calipers or a strip of paper.
- Measure the diameter where the shoulder flattens out, where the collar will rest.
- Measure the height between those two points along the slope.
- Note the widest point of the cap or closure.
- Send a photo of the bottle next to a ruler with your quote request.
Cone necker or a flat necker
Both styles carry your brand on the neck, but they behave differently on the shelf and on your packing table.
If you want a single flat face with a hole, compare our die cut bottle neckers before you decide.
| Point | Cone necker | Flat necker |
|---|---|---|
| Visible faces | All the way around | Front and back |
| Fit | Rests on the shoulder | Hangs from the neck hole |
| Bottle shape needed | Clear sloped shoulder | Almost any neck |
| Assembly | Formed by hand at the bottle | Slipped straight on |
| Print area | One long curved band | Two flat panels |
Designing for a curved band
The printed blank is an arc, so straight artwork bends when it becomes a cone. Your proof shows the flat arc with the visible zone marked.
Keep your logo near the middle of the arc. The ends overlap at the closure, so anything placed there will be hidden.
Fine lines near the top edge sit close to the neck and are hard to see. Put small text in the lower half of the band, where the cone is widest.
Our bottle necker design guide explains safe zones and how much text fits on a collar.
What to print on a cone collar
A collar has a narrow band, so treat it like a headline. One logo, one product name and one short line usually fill it.
Flavor names, batch details or a harvest date work well on a collar. They are the details a buyer checks before picking up the bottle.
The inside of the cone can carry a printed pattern or a thank-you line. Customers see it when they lift the collar off.
- Logo centered on the front of the arc
- Product or flavor name under the logo
- A repeat logo or pattern around the back
- A website or social handle near the closure end
Stock for a collar that bends cleanly
A cone has to curve without cracking. That is why we suggest 14 pt to 18 pt cardstock for this style, rather than the thickest boards.
Kraft board suits oils, syrups and pantry goods. Gloss or matte lamination helps on bottles kept in the fridge, where condensation forms.
Soft-touch lamination gives a velvet feel that suits gift bottles. Spot UV on the logo catches light as the bottle turns.
Read about each paper and coating in our guide to tag papers and coatings. We note on the proof if your stock choice may crack on a tight neck.
Assembling cone neckers on your line
Cone neckers arrive packed flat, which keeps cartons small. Each one is formed at the bottle by joining the closure tab.
Most small teams form a batch first, then drop one over each bottle after filling and capping. The collar should settle on the shoulder without force.
Store flat blanks in a dry place. Damp cardstock softens, and a soft collar slumps on the bottle.
If a collar sits crooked, check the closure first. A tab joined one slot off is the usual cause, and it is quick to fix by hand.
Gift sets and seasonal collars
Cone collars are easy to change for a season or a gift edition. Keep the same template and swap only the artwork.
Many small producers print a holiday collar for their usual bottle. Because the bottle label stays the same, you avoid reprinting labels for a short run.
If you also tag the gift box or basket, our tied bottle neck tags can carry a gift note next to the collar.
From bottle measurements to finished collars
You do not need print-ready artwork to start. Send a logo and your bottle details, or plan a layout on our free tag design and proof page.
We draw the cone template from your measurements and place your art on it. You get a free digital proof and can request changes until it is right.
After approval, production takes 4 to 6 business days. Transit is 2 to 3 business days, and shipping is free to the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
Getting a price for cone neckers
Cone bottle neckers start from $0.30 per unit. The exact price depends on size, stock, quantity and finish, and your quote confirms it.
Larger collars, foil and printing on the inside each add cost. A one-sided collar on 14 pt matte stock is usually the leanest option.
To price your job, send a cone necker quote request with your bottle measurements. Any misprinted or damaged cone collars reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.
Cone Bottle Neckers: questions and answers
It is a curved printed blank that forms a short cone around the bottle neck. The wide end rests on the shoulder, so it shows your print all the way around.
No. The collar rests on the shoulder of the bottle and is held by its own shape. The closure tab joins the two ends.
Bottles with a long neck and a sloped shoulder fit best. Oil, syrup, sauce and coffee bottles are common examples.
We need the neck diameter, the shoulder diameter where the collar rests, the height between them and the widest point of the cap.
They arrive packed flat. Each one is formed by joining the closure tab, then dropped over the bottle.
We suggest 14 pt to 18 pt cardstock. Thicker boards can crack when they curve around a narrow neck.
Yes. The inside can carry a pattern, a color or a short message that shows when the collar is lifted off.
Uncoated stock can soften on cold bottles. Matte or gloss lamination helps the collar hold up in the fridge.
Yes, if we know the cap size. We size the top opening so it passes over the cap and still sits snug on the neck.
Your cone collars go into production for 4 to 6 business days once the proof is approved. The flat blanks then reach you in 2 to 3 business days.
Yes. Every order includes a free digital proof showing the flat arc and the visible print zone, with unlimited revisions.
