Quick answer

What are jewelry hang tags?

Jewelry hang tags have to carry your brand on a very small surface without hiding the piece. We print them small, thick enough to stay flat, and finished to suit the price of what they hang from.

Prices start from $0.30 per unit. You get a free digital proof, production takes 4–6 business days after approval, and shipping is free to the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

Who orders jewelry hang tags

Most of our jewelry tag orders come from small makers. Think silversmiths, beaders, resin artists and people who sell at craft fairs and online.

Boutiques that stock several jewelry brands order them too. They use a house tag to show price and a care note, so every piece on the counter looks consistent.

The common thread is size. A ring or a fine chain cannot carry a big tag, so every decision on this page starts with how small the tag can go.

Wholesale sellers order them as well. A shop buyer wants to see a clean, consistent tag on every piece before it goes into a case.

Choosing a size that does not overpower the piece

Pick the tag size from the smallest item in your range. A tag that suits a chunky bangle can swamp a pair of stud earrings.

Many makers order two sizes. A tiny tag goes on rings and studs, and a slightly larger tag goes on necklaces and bracelets. Both share the same artwork, scaled to fit.

Hold a paper cutout of the size next to your real pieces before you order. It takes two minutes and shows you at once whether the tag looks right. Our hang tag size guide lists more standard sizes to test.

What fits on a tag this small

You have room for very little, so choose carefully. The front usually carries the logo and nothing else.

The back is where the useful details go. A short care line, a metal type and a price fit on a 1 x 2 inch back if you keep the type clean. Our checklist for hang tag content helps you cut the list down.

Leave out long stories and full web addresses. A short handle or a QR code takes less space and is easier to read.

If you need both a care note and a story, put the story on a separate card inside the box.

  • Front: logo or brand name only
  • Back: metal or material, such as sterling silver or gold filled
  • Back: price or SKU, printed or added later
  • Back: one short care note, such as keep dry

Stock thickness for tiny tags

Small tags bend easily in a display tray. A thin card curls at the corners after a few days of handling, which makes a fine piece look cheap.

We suggest 16 pt or 18 pt cardstock for most jewelry tags. It stays flat but is still light enough not to pull a fine chain to one side.

Avoid the thickest stocks on rings and studs. A heavy tag can tip a ring over on a stand or tug an earring out of its card.

Textured uncoated stock is another option. It has a handmade feel and hides fingerprints, which matters when shoppers handle tags often.

Finishes that suit fine jewelry

Finish matters more than size on jewelry tags. Shoppers pick up the tag and feel it before they read it.

Soft-touch lamination gives a smooth, velvety feel. Gold or silver foil stamping on the logo ties the tag to the metal of the piece. Embossing adds depth without extra ink.

Keep foil lines a little thicker than you would on a large tag. Very fine foil can break up at this scale. You can compare stocks and coatings in our guide to tag paper and finishes.

Attaching tags to rings, chains and clasps

The attachment has to hold without scratching the metal or tangling the chain. Thin cotton string and narrow satin ribbon are the safest choices.

Plastic loop pins are quick to apply, but keep them away from soft stones and delicate settings. Elastic loops suit bangles and stretch bracelets. For more methods, read how to attach hang tags before you choose.

Test one tag on your finest chain before you tag a full batch. If the string catches on the links, switch to narrow ribbon.

  1. Order tags with strings pre-attached so you only tie one knot per piece.
  2. Loop the string through the ring band or around the chain just above the clasp.
  3. Tie a small square knot and trim the ends to the same length.
  4. Turn the tag so the logo faces forward on the display.
  5. Check that the tag does not hide the stone or the main detail.

Tags for gift boxes and pouches

Many jewelers tag the box rather than the piece. This keeps the jewelry clean and gives you a larger tag to work with.

A 1.5 x 2.5 inch tag on a satin ribbon around a box looks like a finished gift. Customers often keep the tag, so a good finish pays off.

If you sell gift sets, our round hang tags for gift packaging are another shape that sits nicely on a box lid.

Write a short thank you note on the back of a box tag. It costs nothing extra to print and many buyers mention it when they give the piece as a gift.

Pricing tags for markets and boutique counters

Prices at craft fairs change between events. Printing the price on the tag locks you in.

A blank price box on the back lets you write or label prices by hand. Boutiques that use one house tag for many brands often do this.

If you prefer a printed price, group your pieces by price point and order a version for each group. We show every version on the proof.

A small printed sticker is a third route. Our printed hang tag stickers let you add or change a price without reprinting the tag itself.

Common mistakes on jewelry tag orders

Most problems come from designing at screen size and printing at tag size. Print your draft at actual size on plain paper before you send it.

Another easy fix is string length. Ask for shorter strings on chains and longer ones on boxes, so each tag hangs at a tidy height.

  • Fonts under 6 pt that blur when printed
  • Tags so heavy they tip rings or pull earrings
  • Long strings that tangle with fine chains
  • Too much text on the front of the tag
  • Bright white tags next to warm gold pieces where a cream or kraft tag looks softer

Storing and handling tagged jewelry

Tags take wear in trays, bags and travel cases. A few habits keep them looking new for longer.

Store tagged pieces flat or hanging, not piled in a bag. Piling bends the tag corners and knots the strings together.

Keep spare tags in the box they shipped in, away from damp. Laminated tags resist moisture and fingerprints better than bare stock, which helps at outdoor markets.
