What a product tag has to tell the shopper

A product tag answers questions before anyone has to ask a staff member. What is this, what is it made of, what does it cost, and how do I care for it.

That makes it different from a pure brand tag. The logo still matters, but the back of the tag carries most of the useful work.

Shops that sell many similar items rely on product tags most. Think gift stores, home goods shops, farm stores, bath and body brands and craft sellers.

Pick only the details your shoppers actually ask about. A crowded tag gets skimmed, while a short one gets read.

  • Product name and variant, such as size, scent or color
  • Price, or a blank space for a price
  • SKU or barcode for the checkout
  • Materials or ingredients
  • Care, storage or usage notes

Laying out the front and back

Split the job between the two sides. The front sells, and the back informs.

Put the logo and product name on the front. Shoppers see this side on the shelf, so keep it clean.

Keep the same type sizes across every version in your range. Shoppers comparing two items side by side then read them the same way.

Use the back for everything else. Group details in a fixed order so a shopper can find the price or care note in the same spot on every tag. Our page on what to include on a hang tag goes through the options line by line.

Barcodes and SKUs on printed tags

A barcode on the tag speeds up checkout and keeps stock counts accurate. Send us the barcode file or the number for each product.

Barcodes need a clear white or light area around them to scan. Do not place them on a busy pattern or a dark background. Black bars on a light background scan best.

On kraft stock, print the barcode in black inside a white box. This gives the scanner the contrast it needs.

Keep the bars at a size your scanner can read. Ask your point of sale provider for the smallest size it handles, then tell us when you send the file.

One design, many product versions

Most product tag orders cover a range of items. A soap maker may need ten scents. A home goods shop may need five sizes of the same throw.

You do not need a new design for each. Keep the layout the same and change only the product name, the variant and the barcode. Every version appears on your proof for checking.

Plan how many of each you need. Order more of your best sellers and fewer of the slow ones.

Name your files and versions clearly, such as lavender-8oz. Clear names make proof checking faster and cut the chance of a mix-up.

  1. List every product and variant you need tags for.
  2. Write the name, details and price or SKU for each one.
  3. Send your logo and one master layout.
  4. Review each version on the proof, line by line.
  5. Approve once every name, price and barcode is correct.

Printed prices or blank price spaces

A printed price looks neat and saves labeling time. The downside is that every price change means new tags.

A blank price box lets you write or sticker prices by hand. That suits shops that sell at markets or change prices often.

If you sell the same item in a shop and online, a blank box also lets you price each channel differently without a second print run.

A middle route is a printed tag with a small price sticker. Our printed stickers for hang tags can be made to match your tag colors.

Choosing size and stock

Product tags carry more text than brand tags, so they usually need a bit more room. A 2 x 3.5 inch tag is a common choice, since it fits a logo, details and a barcode without crowding.

For lighter products, 14 pt or 16 pt cardstock is enough. For heavier goods or tags that get handled a lot, choose 18 pt. Matte lamination resists fingerprints and smudges on busy shelves.

Kraft board suits natural goods, but dense text is easier to read on white stock.

If you are not sure which size fits your text, our guide to hang tag sizes compares common options.

Attaching tags to different products

The right attachment depends on the product. Clothing and textiles often use plastic loop pins or safety pins. Jars, candles and bottles suit elastic loops.

Boxes, bags and bundles work well with cotton string. Ask for strings pre-attached if you are tagging a large batch, since it saves time at the packing table.

Elastic loops need no tying, which helps when you tag jars by the dozen. Safety pins suit textiles that a plastic pin might snag. Our guide on how to attach hang tags to products compares each method.

Writing clear product details

Short, plain words work best on a tag. Shoppers glance at it for a few seconds, so lead with what matters most.

Use lists for materials or ingredients instead of full sentences. Keep care notes to a few words, such as hand wash cold or keep out of direct sun.

Check every claim you print. Only state materials, origins or features you can back up.

Read the tag aloud before you send it. Wording that trips you up will trip up shoppers too.

If you print a website or social handle, make sure it is current. A dead link on thousands of tags is costly to fix.

Common product tag mistakes

Most product tag problems are content problems, not print problems. Reading every version on the proof catches them.

Ask a second person to read the proof against your product list. Fresh eyes catch a wrong price faster than the person who typed it. If one slips through, our return and reprint policy covers misprints reported within 10 days.

  • A wrong price or SKU on one version among many
  • Barcodes printed on a busy or dark background
  • So much text on the back that nothing stands out
  • Printed prices on items that change price often
  • A punched hole placed through part of the text

Product tags alongside sale and shipping tags

Product tags often sit with other tag types. A sale tag can hang next to the product tag during a promotion, and a shipping tag goes on outgoing parcels.

Printing them in the same style keeps your brand consistent. Browse our sale, product and shipping tags to plan a matching set.

Use the same fonts and colors across all three, but give each a clear job. A shopper should know at a glance which tag shows the price and which shows the discount.
