What are half circle hang tags?
A half circle hang tag has one straight edge and one curved edge, like a rising sun. That flat line gives your text a clean base, while the curve keeps the tag soft and friendly.

What sets a half circle tag apart
A full circle has no natural top or bottom. A half circle does, because the straight edge always tells the eye where the base is.
That makes half circles easy to read. Text sits along the flat line, and the curve frames it like an arch or a rainbow.
Buyers who like round tags but struggle to fit text on them often switch to this shape. If you want the full round look instead, see our custom printed circle hang tags.
Dome up or smile down
The same tag can hang two ways, and each changes the feel. Decide this before artwork, because it sets where the hole goes and which way text runs.
A dome shape, with the arch at the top, reads like a doorway or a sunrise. A smile shape, with the flat edge at the top, hangs neatly from a ribbon along its straight side.
If you are torn, ask for both orientations on the proof. Seeing them side by side usually settles it.
| Orientation | Hole position | Feel | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dome (arch up) | Top of the arch | Calm, classic, like a window | Candles, skincare, home goods |
| Smile (arch down) | Center of the flat edge | Playful, open | Baby goods, bakery, gifts |
| Smile with two holes | Both ends of the flat edge | Hangs level on a ribbon | Gift bags and baskets |
Products that suit an arched tag
The arch shape echoes rounded jars, domed candle lids and curved bottle shoulders. It also fits brands that already use arches in their logo or store design.
Arched tags are often paired with arched labels and arched windows on packaging. If your brand uses this motif, the tag ties it together.
Half circles also work well tucked into a bow on a gift bag. The flat edge sits under the ribbon, and the arch pops up above it.
- Candles in tumblers and amber jars
- Skincare and body care with arch-shaped labels
- Baby clothing and nursery gifts
- Bakery bags and cookie tins
- Plant shops and garden goods
- Boho and minimalist home decor
Laying out text along a flat base
On a dome tag, set your brand name along the straight bottom edge. Put the logo or an icon in the curve above it.
On a smile tag, reverse that order. The name runs along the top straight edge, and a small detail sits in the curve below.
Curved text can follow the arch for a sun-ray effect. Keep it to a short tagline, since long curved lines are slow to read. Our tips on what to print on your hang tags help you choose what stays.
Sizing a half circle correctly
Size is given by the width of the straight edge. The height is always half that width, so a 3 in tag stands 1.5 in tall.
This means half circles are short for their width. A 2 in tag fits a logo only, while 3 in and 3.5 in tags fit a logo plus one line.
Hold a paper cutout against the product before ordering. Half circles look smaller in person than on screen because of their short height.
For very wide items, such as blankets or baskets, a 3.5 in tag keeps the shape in scale. Small jars and baby socks look better with a 2 in or 2.5 in tag.
Hole placement and attachment
A single hole at the top of the arch lets a dome tag hang straight. On a smile tag, a single hole sits in the middle of the flat edge.
Two holes near each end of the straight edge let ribbon pass through so the tag hangs perfectly level. This suits gift baskets and bag handles.
Cotton string, jute, satin ribbon and safety pins all work. Read our guide to attaching hang tags for which method suits your product.
Stocks and finishes for half circles
Because half circles are short, they can flop on thin stock. We suggest 16 pt or heavier, and 24 pt or 32 pt double-layered board for a firm feel.
Kraft board with white ink suits plant shops and bakeries. Soft-touch lamination with a foil logo suits candles and skincare.
Edge painting on 32 pt board traces the arch with a line of color. Compare options in our notes on hang tag papers and finishes.
Mistakes to avoid on arched tags
Most problems come from forgetting how short the shape is. Check these points before sending artwork.
If you want more flexibility in shape, our full set of hang tag shapes covers rectangles, circles and custom outlines.
- Placing text in the curve's tips, where the tag narrows to a point
- A hole in the dome top that cuts into the logo
- Choosing a width too small to hold any text
- Forgetting bleed along the curved edge
- Light stock that bends at the corners of the flat edge
Pairing arched tags with arched labels
Many brands already use an arch on their jar label or box window. Matching the tag to that arch makes the whole product look planned.
Send us your label artwork along with your logo. We can match the curve, colors and type so the tag reads as part of the same set.
If your label printer used Pantone colors, give us the numbers. We print the tag to the same Pantone references, which keeps tag and label consistent.

Price, delivery and reprints for arched tags
Half circle hang tags start from $0.30 per unit. Your final price depends on width, stock, quantity and finish, and it is confirmed when you request a half circle tag quote.
Thick double-layered board, foil and two-hole ribbon setups each add a little cost. A single-sided dome tag on 16 pt stock keeps the price lean.
We ship arched tags free to the US, UK, Canada and Australia, packed flat so the corners stay crisp. If any arrive misprinted or damaged, tell us within 10 days for a reprint or refund.
