Why brands pick kraft over white card
Kraft board has a warm brown color and visible fibers. It tells shoppers the product is handmade, natural or small batch before they read the tag.
That is why bakeries, soap makers, candle makers, plant shops and farm stands order it so often. It also suits outdoor gear, leather goods and denim, where a rugged look fits the product.
The trade-off is control over color. Ink printed on brown board looks darker and warmer than it does on white. Plan your artwork with that in mind from the start.
Kraft also forgives small marks. A scuff or fingerprint that shows on bright white card barely shows on brown board, which helps at busy markets.
How ink behaves on brown board
Kraft is uncoated and slightly absorbent, and its brown base shows through most inks. Black and dark colors print crisp. Light colors fade into the board.
A bright yellow logo, for example, turns a muddy olive on kraft. Pale pink can nearly vanish. If your brand uses light colors, white ink is usually the answer.
Fine gray tones are another weak spot. They tend to blend into the brown, so pick a true black or a strong color for small text.
The table shows what to expect from each ink choice. Your proof will flag any color that is likely to shift.
| Ink choice | Result on kraft | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Black | Sharp and high contrast | Logos, text, barcodes |
| Dark Pantone colors | Rich, slightly warmer than on white | Brand colors like navy, forest green, burgundy |
| Full color CMYK | Muted, vintage look | Illustrations meant to look printed on paper |
| White ink | Clean, bright, stands out | Light brand colors, minimal logos |
| Light colors without white base | Faded or shifted | Not recommended |
White ink on kraft, and when to use it
White ink is the signature look of a kraft tag. A white logo on brown board is clean and easy to spot from across a shelf.
We can also print white under a color as a base layer. The color then sits on white instead of brown, so it stays close to your brand shade.
Keep white ink lines bold. Very thin strokes may show some board texture through them, which some brands like and others do not. Ask for a proof if you are unsure.
A popular layout is a white logo on the front and black text on the back. The back stays easy to read, and the front gets the clean white mark.
Finishes that work on kraft
Lamination tends to hide the texture that makes kraft attractive, so most customers skip it. The finishes below keep the natural feel while adding a premium touch.
Foil works well on kraft board. Copper and gold foil look warm against brown, and black foil gives a quiet, tonal mark. For a wider look at coatings, see our notes on tag stocks and finishes.
- Foil stamping in gold, copper, silver or black
- Embossing to raise a logo from the board
- Debossing to press a logo into the board
- Spot UV on a logo for a subtle shine against matte brown
Thickness and feel
Standard kraft board feels sturdy and holds a punched hole well. For a heavier tag with a premium hand, we can double-layer the board.
Thick kraft tags suit jeans, bags and gift sets, where the tag is handled a lot. Thinner kraft suits food bags, plant pots and small jars, where a light tag looks right.
If you are unsure, ask us to compare both thicknesses in your quote.
Weight also affects how the tag hangs. A heavy tag on a light bag pulls the bag over, while a light tag on a heavy jar can twist and face the wrong way. For apparel, our custom clothing hang tags page covers thickness for garments in more detail.
Shapes that suit a kraft look
A plain rectangle with a punched hole is the classic kraft tag. Rounded corners soften it and stop corners from fraying in shipping.
Nature-themed brands often go further with the shape. Our leaf shaped hang tags are popular for plant shops and herbal products printed on kraft.
Any die-cut shape is possible. Keep inside curves gentle, since sharp points on kraft can wear down with handling.
Shape also changes how the board edge shows. Kraft has a brown core all the way through, so cut edges stay the same color as the face.
String, twine and eyelets
Jute twine is the natural partner for kraft. It has the same rustic texture and color. Cotton string is softer and cleaner if your look is more modern.
A metal eyelet reinforces the hole. That matters on heavy items or tags that get tugged often, such as on tote bags. Our guide to attaching hang tags to products covers knots and loop styles.
- Choose jute for a rustic look or cotton for a cleaner one.
- Decide whether strings should come pre-attached or loose.
- Add a metal eyelet if the product is heavy or handled often.
- Pick a string length that suits the product, such as longer for jars and shorter for bags.
- Confirm the hole position on your proof so it clears your artwork.
Kraft tags for food, gifts and plants
Bakeries tie kraft tags to bread bags and cookie boxes with twine. Holiday gift shops use them on hampers and wrapped boxes. Garden centers push them into pots or loop them over stems.
For damp settings like plant pots, keep the tag clear of soil and water where you can. Kraft board is paper and will soften if it stays wet.
Many food sellers combine kraft tags with a separate sticker for each flavor. Our custom stickers for hang tags make that easy without reprinting the tag.
For gift hampers, a longer string lets the tag sit on top of the wrapping where people see it first.
Recycled-content kraft
Recycled-content stock is available if you want your tag material to match a low-waste message. Ask for it in your quote and we will confirm the options.
Only make claims about the material that your supplier paperwork supports. If you are unsure what to print about recycling on the tag, ask us and we will tell you what applies to your order.
Recycled board can show small flecks and slight shade changes between batches. Most kraft buyers see this as part of the charm, but tell us if exact shade matching matters for your brand.
Mistakes to avoid with kraft tags
Most kraft problems come from expecting white-card color on brown board. A proof review catches nearly all of them.
Send us your brand colors as Pantone values if you have them. We can then show on the proof how each one will look on brown board. If you want to try the look on screen first, you can start designing your own tags and send us the draft.
- Light logo colors printed without a white base
- Thin script fonts that lose detail on the board texture
- Glossy lamination that hides the natural kraft look
- Tags left in damp spots where the paper softens
- Photos with lots of light areas that turn muddy
