What hang tag stickers do on a finished product

A hang tag sticker is a printed label sized to sit on or around a tag. It is small, cheap to change and quick to apply.

Most of our customers use them in one of four ways. Each use changes the size and shape we recommend, so it helps to know which one you need before you ask for a quote.

If you are not sure which use fits, describe your product and how you pack it. We will suggest a shape and size in the quote.

  • Sealing a string or ribbon to the back of a tag so it cannot slide out
  • Folding over a loop of string to make a small flag label
  • Adding a size, scent, flavor or color name to a blank branded tag
  • Covering an old price or SKU with a new one when stock is repriced

Printing one tag design and labeling many products

This is where stickers save the most money. You print a single branded hang tag for your whole line. Then a small sticker carries the detail that changes from item to item.

A candle maker might print one tag with the logo and care notes. A round sticker then names the scent on each jar. A boutique might do the same with sizes on one shared set of printed clothing hang tags.

When a product is discontinued, you stop ordering that sticker. Your main tags stay in use, so nothing gets thrown away.

Sizes that fit common tags

Measure the clear space on your tag before you pick a sticker size. Leave a margin of at least an eighth of an inch on every side so the edge does not hang off the tag.

The table below shows typical pairings. We can cut any size in between.

If your tags are already printed, send us a photo with a ruler beside one. That lets us check the clear space before we cut anything. Our guide to common hang tag sizes lists the tag sizes these stickers usually sit on.

Fold-over flag stickers on string

A flag sticker wraps around a length of string and sticks to itself. It hangs like a little tag with no punched hole at all.

Flags work well for bread bags, gift ribbons and twine around bundles. Print the logo on one half and the item name on the other half.

Keep text away from the fold line. We mark the fold on your proof so you can see exactly where it will crease.

Leave about a quarter inch of the strip unprinted where the string runs through. That small gap lets the two halves meet cleanly around the string. Thick jute needs a slightly longer strip than thin cotton.

Getting the artwork right for small labels

Small labels are unforgiving. Thin lines vanish and tiny type fills in, so plan the art for the size you will actually apply.

Our free design help covers this. If you send a logo, we will rebuild it for the sticker size and show it to you on a free proof before anything prints.

  1. Keep body text at 6 pt or larger and avoid hairline strokes.
  2. Use one bold mark per sticker, such as a logo or a single word.
  3. Leave a safe margin inside the cut line for all text.
  4. Send vector files when you can, or high resolution images when you cannot.
  5. List every version you need, such as each scent or size name.

Matching stickers to the tags they sit on

A sticker should look like part of the tag, not an afterthought. The easiest way is to print both in the same job with the same colors.

On kraft tags, a kraft sticker with white ink keeps the natural look. Our brown kraft hang tags with white ink pair well with this style.

On a glossy black tag, a matte sticker can look flat. Ask us to match the finish so both pieces catch the light the same way.

White stickers on white tags can disappear. A thin printed border or a contrasting background color gives the label a clear edge.

Applying stickers by hand without crooked results

Most small brands apply stickers by hand at a packing table. A little setup makes the batch go faster and look neater.

Lay out tags in rows with the strings already attached. Apply the sticker to the same corner every time. A simple cardboard jig with a cutout helps keep placement consistent.

Press firmly from the center out to push out air. Avoid touching the adhesive side, since oils from your fingers weaken the bond.

Apply stickers at room temperature. Cold tags from a storage van can stop the adhesive from gripping well for the first hour.

Mistakes we see on sticker orders

These come up often on first orders. Each one is easy to avoid once you know about it.

The slow-seller problem is the costly one. Order fewer copies of the versions you are unsure about and reorder once you know how they sell.

  • Picking a sticker wider than the tag it goes on
  • Ordering one big batch of a scent or size that sells slowly
  • Placing text right on a fold line for flag stickers
  • Using thin script fonts that blur at under one inch wide
  • Forgetting a sticker for the string seal when strings are tied loosely

Stickers for repricing and seasonal changes

Prices change. Reprinting every tag for a small increase wastes stock you already paid for.

A price sticker covers the old number cleanly. Size it a bit larger than the printed price box so no old digits peek out. For clearance events, our bright printed sale tags can sit alongside the sticker on the same product.

Seasonal stickers work the same way. A holiday mark on an everyday tag changes the look for a few weeks without a full reprint.

Keep a small stock of each price sticker on hand. When a supplier raises costs, you can update a whole shelf in an afternoon.

Where the sticker goes on the tag

Placement depends on the job. A string seal goes on the back, over the knot or loop, so the front stays clean.

A size or scent label usually sits on the front in a spot you planned when designing the tag. Leave a blank box in the tag art for it. Our notes on what to put on a hang tag help you decide which details belong on the tag and which belong on the sticker.

Price stickers often go on the back. Shoppers turn the tag over to check the price, and the front stays focused on your brand.
