Quick answer

What are leaf hang tags?

Leaf hang tags are die-cut to the outline of a leaf, so the shape tells your story before the print does. We cut them from kraft or cardstock and punch the hole where the stem would be.

Prices start from $0.30 per unit. You get a free digital proof, production takes 4–6 business days after approval, and shipping is free to the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

Who uses leaf shaped tags

Leaf tags fit any product that is grown, picked or brewed. Plant nurseries, florists and garden centers order them for pots and bouquets.

Tea blenders, herbal skincare makers and natural soap brands use them on pouches and jars. Fall markets and holiday gift shops order maple and oak shapes for seasonal goods.

The shape does the branding work. A shopper sees a leaf and thinks fresh, green or natural, even before reading your name.

Landscapers and seed sellers use them too. A leaf tag on a seed packet bundle or a gift plant makes a small product feel considered.

Picking a leaf outline

Leaf shapes range from a simple oval with a point to a detailed maple with many lobes. Simpler shapes are easier to print on and hold up better with handling.

A detailed outline looks striking on a display table. But the small points can bend in shipping or get caught on other tags in a bag.

Use the table to match an outline to your product. If you want a shape that matches a specific plant, send a sketch or photo and we will draw a cut line from it.

Size matters as well. A leaf that looks right at four inches can feel crowded at one and a half, so scale detail to the size you choose.

Fitting text inside a leaf

A leaf narrows at both ends, so your usable space is smaller than the tag size suggests. Keep text in the wide middle of the shape.

Center your logo on the widest part and keep at least an eighth of an inch from the cut line. Put plant names, care notes or ingredients on the back.

Printed vein lines look nice, but they compete with text. Use them on the front only and keep them light, or emboss them instead of printing them.

If you are unsure what to include, our tips on hang tag wording can help you choose.

  • Front: logo centered on the widest part
  • Front: optional light vein pattern or embossed veins
  • Back: plant or product name
  • Back: short care line, such as bright light, water weekly

Where the hole goes

The natural spot for the hole is the stem end. That way the leaf hangs point down, just like a real leaf.

If your outline has a short stem tab, we place the hole in the tab. This keeps it clear of your print. On shapes without a tab, the hole goes near the base with a safe margin.

Keep the hole at least a quarter inch from any edge. Closer than that, the string can tear through the paper.

A metal eyelet strengthens the hole. It is worth adding on plant tags that get moved and watered often. Our guide on ways to attach hang tags explains the options.

Stock choices for natural products

Kraft board is the most common choice for leaf tags. Its brown color fits the theme, and white or green ink reads well on it. You can see more on our kraft hang tag options page.

Printed cardstock lets you fill the leaf with a bright green, a fall red or a full color illustration. Matte lamination protects that print from scuffs.

Recycled-content stock suits brands that talk about low waste. Ask for it in your quote.

For a heavier feel, choose 18 pt cardstock. It keeps the leaf flat so the outline stays crisp on a shelf.

Using leaf tags on plant pots

Plant tags live in a tough spot. They face water, soil and sun every day on a nursery bench.

Hang the tag from the pot rim or a stem with string, rather than pushing it into the soil. Paper tags soften if they stay wet. Matte lamination adds some protection from splashes.

If a plant is sold the same week it is tagged, a plain kraft tag is fine. For stock that sits for weeks, choose laminated cardstock instead.

Write the plant name on the back with a pencil if your range changes often. Pencil holds up better than most pens on damp paper.

Seasonal leaf tags for fall and holidays

Maple and oak tags sell well from September through November. Shops use them on candles, jams, baked goods and gift baskets.

Order seasonal tags a few weeks before you need them. That leaves time for proofing, 4–6 business days of production and 2–3 business days in transit.

Some shops print one leaf shape in two or three fall colors. Each color can mark a different scent or flavor on the same shelf.

After the season, switch to a plain green leaf for spring stock. Keeping the same outline makes your brand easy to spot all year.

Steps to order leaf hang tags

The process is the same as any shaped tag, with one extra check on the cut line. If you want to sketch ideas first, you can design your hang tags online and send us the draft.

Most leaf orders need one or two proof rounds. The first round usually settles the outline, and the second fine tunes text placement.

  1. Choose a leaf outline or send a sketch of your own.
  2. Pick a size based on where the tag will hang.
  3. Choose kraft, cardstock or recycled-content stock.
  4. Send your logo and any back-side text.
  5. Review the proof, checking the cut line and hole position.
  6. Approve the proof so production can start.

Mistakes on leaf tag orders

Shaped tags bring a few problems that plain rectangles never have. Most are easy to catch on the proof.

Ask to see the proof at actual size on your screen. A leaf that looks fine zoomed in can look busy once it is at true size. Our hang tag sizing guide shows how common sizes compare.

  • Text that runs into the narrow tip of the leaf
  • A maple outline with points too fine to survive shipping
  • A hole placed in the wide middle so the tag hangs sideways
  • Printed veins that make small text hard to read
  • Bare paper tags pushed straight into wet soil

Pairing leaf tags with other shapes

Some brands use a leaf tag for the brand mark and a second tag for details. A small rectangle on the same string carries the price or barcode.

If you want a different natural shape for part of your range, our custom die-cut hang tags can be cut to flowers, fruit or any outline you send.

Tie both tags on the same string so they stay together. The leaf goes in front and the small tag sits behind it.
