Choosing hang tags
What actually separates one hang tag style from another
Most hang tags share the same parts: a printed card, a hole and something to hang it by. The styles on this page differ in four ways.
The outline can be a plain rectangle, a circle or a shape cut from your own drawing. The card can be flat or folded to add a second panel.
Stock changes the weight and texture, from smooth 14 pt card to double-layered 32 pt board. The finish changes how it feels, and some tags arrive already strung.
Once you know which of those four things matters most for your product, the choice gets short. A tag shaped like your logo, for example, is a job for die cut hang tags cut to your outline.
All thirteen styles in one comparison table
Read the table by the middle column first. Find the row that describes your product, then check the key detail on the right.
Several rows overlap on purpose. A clothing tag can also be kraft, folded or strung, so treat the names as starting points rather than fixed boxes.
| Product | Best for | Key detail |
|---|---|---|
| Circle Hang Tags | Candles, jars and gift boxes | Logo centered on a round face |
| Clothing Hang Tags | Apparel lines and boutiques | Room for size, style and care notes |
| Die Cut Hang Tags | Brands with a distinctive outline | Cut to any closed shape you supply |
| Folded Hang Tags | Products with a story to tell | Two outer panels plus an inside spread |
| Half Circle Hang Tags | Shelf edges and bag tops | Flat top edge with a curved base |
| Jewelry Hang Tags | Rings, chains and earrings | Very small card with a fine string |
| Kraft Hang Tags | Natural, handmade or rustic goods | Brown board, often with white ink |
| Leaf Hang Tags | Plants, tea, soap and garden goods | Pointed leaf outline with a stem hole |
| Mini Hang Tags | Small gifts, favors and samples | Short copy, often one side only |
| Paper Hang Tags With String | Busy shops that tag by hand | String looped through before shipping |
| Round Hang Tags | Bottles, baskets and handmade goods | Full circle, punched near the edge |
| Rounded Corner Hang Tags | Everyday retail tagging | Rectangle with softened corners |
| Silk Hang Tags | Premium and gift-ready products | Soft-touch lamination with a smooth feel |
Outline: square corners, soft corners or a custom cut
A plain rectangle is the cheapest outline to cut and the easiest to lay out. Text lines up cleanly, and barcodes fit without trimming.
Sharp corners can bend in a tote bag or catch on knitwear. Softening them with a small radius fixes that, and rounded corner hang tags for daily retail keep the clean rectangle layout.
Curved outlines read as softer and more crafted. Circles and half circles suit food, candles and home goods. A leaf outline tells shoppers the product is natural before they read a word.
Custom outlines cost more to set up than a rectangle, but the cutting line is reused on every reorder. That makes a shaped tag a better long-term choice than it first appears.
Space for copy: when a flat card is too small
Count your lines of copy before you pick a style. A brand name, product name, maker line, care notes and price can fill both sides of a 2 x 3.5 in card.
If the copy will not fit at a readable size, you have two choices. Make the flat tag bigger, or fold it.
A fold doubles the printable area without making the tag look oversized on the shelf. Folded hang tags with an inside spread suit makers who want room for a story, ingredients or a thank you note.
- 1 to 3 lines of copy: mini or round tag
- 4 to 8 lines: standard flat rectangle or circle
- Copy on both sides plus a barcode: larger flat tag
- Story, care steps and a price: folded tag
Small products need small, light tags
A tag should never be heavier or wider than the item it hangs on. On a ring, a hair clip or a sample vial, a standard tag swings, flips over and hides the product.
For these items, size down to around 1 x 2 in or smaller and keep copy to a logo and a price. Thinner 14 pt or 16 pt stock also keeps the weight down.
Jewelry brands usually need a fine thread or a small loop pin rather than cotton string. Ask for a smaller hole too, so the tag sits close to the clasp instead of sliding along the chain. Gift and favor makers often pick mini hang tags for small gifts because one design can cover many products.
Test a sample tag on the actual item before you approve. If the product tips, twists or droops under the tag, go one size smaller or one stock thinner.
Choosing a stock weight for each style
Stock is measured in points, where one point is a thousandth of an inch. A 14 pt tag is light and flexible, while a 32 pt tag feels like a thin coaster.
Small tags rarely need more than 16 pt. Larger flat tags and anything that hangs outdoors or on heavy goods do better at 18 pt or 24 pt.
Kraft board changes the look more than the weight. Its brown surface takes white ink well. Shoppers read it as natural, and kraft hang tags in natural brown board are a common pick for coffee, soap and leather goods.
| Stock | Feel in the hand | Styles it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 14 pt cardstock | Light, bends easily | Mini and jewelry tags |
| 16 pt cardstock | Firm, still thin | Circle, round and rounded corner tags |
| 18 pt cardstock | Solid, stays flat | Clothing and folded tags |
| 24 pt double-layered | Thick and rigid | Premium flat tags, edge painting |
| 32 pt double-layered | Very thick, coaster-like | Statement tags with foil or embossing |
| Kraft board | Matte, fibrous, brown | Kraft and leaf tags |
Finishes that change how a tag feels
Lamination protects the print and sets the mood. Matte keeps colors calm and is easy to write on, while gloss makes photos and bright colors pop.
Soft-touch lamination gives a velvet-like surface that shoppers notice when they pick the tag up. That finish is the core of silk hang tags with a soft-touch feel.
Spot UV, foil stamping, embossing and debossing add detail to one part of the design. On thick 24 pt or 32 pt tags, painted edges add a line of color around the outline.
How your tags arrive: loose, punched or strung
Every tag style can ship flat and punched, ready for your own string, ribbon or pins. That works well if you already stock attachments or tag products by machine.
If you tag by hand, string is the slow part. Ordering paper hang tags with string attached means each tag arrives looped and ready to tie.
Metal grommets reinforce the hole on tags that get handled a lot. Elastic loops, satin ribbon, safety pins and plastic loop pins are also available.
Matching a style to the product it hangs on
Start with the product, not the tag. A tag that echoes the shape or material of the item looks like it belongs there.
Plant sellers, tea brands and natural skincare makers often choose a leaf outline. You can see the shape options on our page for leaf hang tags for natural products.
Candle and jar makers lean toward circles. Fashion and accessories brands usually stay with rectangles because they hold sizing and care details neatly.
Think about the display too. A tag on a rack needs its key message on the front. A tag tied to a gift box is often read on both sides.
Five steps from shortlist to printed tags
From proof approval to delivery usually takes under two weeks. The steps below keep the proof round short.
If you are still unsure between two styles, send both in one request. We can quote and proof each, and our team can also help with artwork when you design your hang tags with us.
- Pick one or two styles from the table above.
- Measure the product and decide the largest tag size that will not cover it.
- Choose stock, finish and attachment, or ask us to suggest them.
- Send your logo and copy for a quote and a free digital proof.
- Approve the proof; production takes 4 to 6 business days and transit 2 to 3.
First-order mistakes to avoid with hang tags
Most problems on a first order come from deciding the tag before thinking about how it hangs. A few checks on the proof save a reprint.
Apparel brands face the most of these, because tags pass through fitting rooms and get tugged. Our guide to clothing hang tags for apparel lines covers fabric-safe attachment in more detail.
- Placing the hole too close to the edge, so it tears when pulled
- Putting text under the hole or behind a grommet
- Choosing 14 pt stock for a large tag that then curls
- Using fine script fonts smaller than about 7 pt
- Printing a price that will change before the tags run out
- Picking gloss lamination when staff need to write on the tag
Proofs, reorders and shipping for tag orders

Hang Tags: questions buyers ask
A rounded corner rectangle fits almost anything, from apparel to jars. It also holds text and barcodes neatly.
Yes. Send both designs in one request and we quote and proof each style separately.
Yes. Every style on this page can be sized to your product, and the proof shows the exact dimensions.
A folded tag gives you four panels, which is roughly double a flat tag of the same size. A large flat tag printed on both sides is the next best option.
Not really. Send a clean outline or a sketch, and we turn it into a cutting line on your proof.
Kraft and leaf tags on brown board are the usual choice. White ink also prints well on dark cardstock in any shape.
Yes, as long as the foiled area is not too fine. Very thin lines under about 0.5 pt can fill in, so we flag them on the proof.
Most do, and you choose its size and position. Some buyers skip the hole and use the tag as a box insert or label.
Mini and jewelry tags are made for that. Keep them light, around 14 pt or 16 pt, so they do not tip the product over.
Yes. Edge painting is available on 24 pt and 32 pt double-layered tags in most shapes.
We bundle strung tags so the strings stay in order. They come out of the box ready to tie.
Production takes 4 to 6 business days after you approve the proof. Transit adds 2 to 3 business days.
