What makes a necker die cut
Every bottle necker has a hole for the neck. A die cut necker also has a custom outer shape, cut by a steel die made for your design.
That outline can follow your logo, a fruit, a leaf, an arch or the silhouette of your bottle. It turns a plain card into something shoppers recognize from a distance. On a crowded shelf, shape is often noticed before color.
These neckers sit on the neck without string or glue. Customers slide them off easily, which suits recipes, coupons and gift notes printed on the back.
Products that use die cut neckers
Die cut neckers work on almost any bottle with a defined neck. They are popular with small food, drink and home fragrance makers who sell through shops.
You can see how they compare with other shapes in our range of printed bottle neckers for every bottle.
- Olive oil, vinegar and dressing bottles
- Craft soda, juice and cold brew bottles
- Honey and syrup bottles with a narrow neck
- Room spray, diffuser and essential oil bottles
- Hot sauce bottles at farmers markets
- Bath oil and beard oil bottles
Slit hole or full circle hole
The neck hole is the most important cut on the whole piece. Choose its style based on your cap and how fast you need to apply the neckers.
A full circle hole is cleaner and stays put. A slit hole flexes open, so it passes over a wider cap and then closes around the neck.
Not sure which to pick? We can show both hole styles on your proof so you can compare.
| Feature | Full circle hole | Slit hole |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Caps the same size as the neck | Caps wider than the neck |
| Hold on the bottle | Firm, does not slide off | Secure, but easier to remove |
| Application speed | Fast on a matching neck | Fast, even on flared caps |
| Look | Neat round opening | Small radial cuts around the hole |
Measuring the neck for a clean fit
Measure the neck where you want the necker to rest, usually just below the cap ring. Use calipers if you have them, or wrap a paper strip and measure its length.
Then measure the widest part of the cap. If the cap is wider than the neck by more than a little, a slit hole is usually the right call.
Send these numbers with a photo of the bottle. We size the hole slightly larger than the neck, so the necker drops on smoothly without wobbling.
Bottles from different suppliers can have slightly different necks. If you switch bottle suppliers, send new measurements before your next reorder.
Designing a custom outline
Simple outlines cut cleanest. Smooth curves, rounded points and wide shapes work better than thin spikes or narrow gaps.
Leave enough board between the neck hole and the outer edge. A thin bridge of paper there will tear when the necker is pushed over the cap.
Our guide to designing bottle neckers shows safe distances and sample outlines. You can also send a rough sketch and let our designers draw the cut line.
- Keep at least a finger's width of board around the neck hole
- Round off sharp points so they do not bend in transit
- Put the logo below the hole, where it faces the shopper
- Leave a clear margin between artwork and the cut line
Using the back of the necker
The back of a die cut necker is valuable space. Shoppers often turn it over while holding the bottle.
Recipes, pairing ideas, a QR code to your shop or a short founder note all fit here. A perforated coupon strip at the bottom can drive a repeat purchase.
For ideas on what to include, see what to print on a product tag. The same rules apply to neckers: one clear message, short lines, readable type.
Stock and coating for bottles in cold storage
Bottles that go in the fridge collect condensation, and bare cardstock can soften. Gloss or matte lamination helps the necker keep its shape.
For shelf-stable products, uncoated textured stock or kraft board gives a natural feel. Heavier 24 pt or 32 pt board suits gift bottles where the necker should feel substantial.
Compare each option in our comparison of tag stocks and finishes before you request a quote.
Applying neckers at the filling table
Die cut neckers go on after the bottle is filled and capped. Most small teams set a stack beside the capping station and slip one on as each bottle moves past.
Keep neckers facing the same way in the stack. That way every logo ends up on the front of the bottle without a second look.
If bottles are shrink-sealed, apply the necker after sealing. Heat from a shrink tunnel can curl uncoated stock.
- Store cartons flat and away from damp floors
- Open one stack at a time to keep the rest clean
- Check the first few bottles before running the whole batch
- Set aside any necker with a bent outline
Ordering die cut neckers step by step
The process is the same for a simple arch or a detailed silhouette. The only extra step is approving the cut line.
If you have no artwork yet, you can rough out a layout on our tag design and proofing page and send it along.
- Send your bottle measurements, a photo and your logo or artwork.
- Our designers draw the outline and the neck hole on a template.
- You check a free digital proof showing the cut line and print.
- Request changes as many times as you need, then approve.
- Production takes 4 to 6 business days, and transit takes 2 to 3 more.
- Neckers arrive flat and ready to slip over each bottle.
