When a custom outline is worth it
A rectangle tag tells shoppers your brand name. A die cut tag can show it before they read a word, because the shape itself becomes part of the brand.
Brands with a strong symbol get the most from this. Think of a bakery with a croissant logo or a pet brand with a paw. Each can turn that mark into the tag.
If a classic outline suits you better, browse our other standard hang tag shapes first. Die cut is the right choice when no standard shape fits your idea.
Shapes buyers ask for most
Almost any closed shape can be cut. The shapes below come up again and again because they read clearly at tag size.
Nature shapes are popular enough that we offer leaf shaped hang tags as their own product.
- Logo outlines, cut around the edge of the mark
- Badges, shields and crests for heritage-style brands
- Arches and tall ovals for candles and beauty
- Animal shapes for pet goods and kids clothing
- Product silhouettes, such as a jar, a shirt or a bottle
- Clouds, stars and hearts for gift and baby items
Who orders shaped tags and why
Die cut tags are common with brands that sell in mixed shops, where many products sit side by side. A distinct shape helps a returning customer find your item quickly.
Gift shops, kids clothing labels and pet brands order them often. So do bakeries and candle makers who want a tag that matches their logo on social media.
Some brands use a shaped tag only for a special line. A heart tag for a holiday range or a star tag for a limited edition marks those items without changing the main tag.
- Boutiques that want one tag across clothing and gifts
- Makers selling at markets where tables look alike
- Brands launching a limited or seasonal range
- Pet and kids brands with a character in the logo
How detailed can the cut line be
A steel die cuts the shape in one press. It handles smooth curves very well, but thin spikes and tight inside corners have limits.
Stock thickness changes what is possible. Thinner cardstock takes finer detail, while 32 pt double-layered board needs broader, simpler shapes.
We check every outline on the proof and suggest small changes if a point is likely to bend or tear.
| Outline detail | Suggested stock | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Simple shape: arch, oval, badge | Any stock up to 32 pt | Edge painting works well |
| Moderate: leaf, cloud, animal | 14 pt to 24 pt | Round off the sharpest points |
| Detailed logo outline | 14 pt to 18 pt | Simplify gaps narrower than the board is thick |
| Inside cutouts | 14 pt to 18 pt | Keep bridges of board wide enough to hold |
Turning your logo into a cut line
We do not cut along every tiny detail of a logo. Instead, our designers draw a smooth outline a short distance outside the mark, called a contour.
That small border of board protects your artwork from the cut and keeps the tag strong. It also hides tiny shifts that happen in any cutting process.
You can send a vector file, a high resolution image or a sketch. If you want to try layouts first, use our free tag layout and proof page.
Getting the size right for a shaped tag
Size a die cut tag by the rectangle it fits inside. A heart and a rectangle of the same size take up equal space on the product. The heart, though, has less room to print.
Text has to fit within the shape, not the box around it. Wide shapes give you room for a line of copy, while tall, thin shapes suit a logo only.
Our hang tag sizing guide has templates you can print and trace around your outline.
Placing the hole inside a custom shape
On a shaped tag, the hole decides which way the shape hangs. Put it at the natural top of the design, so it does not hang tilted or upside down.
Keep the hole well clear of thin parts of the outline. A hole near a narrow neck of board is where tags tear first.
For heavy items or tags that will be handled a lot, a metal grommet adds strength. Our page on string, pins and grommets for tags explains each option.
Stocks and finishes for shaped tags
Kraft board gives shaped tags a handmade look that suits bakeries, soap makers and craft brands. Coated white stock shows bright color and fine detail.
Double-layered 24 pt and 32 pt board feels solid and works for simple shapes. Edge painting on these thick tags makes the outline itself the feature.
Foil stamping, spot UV, embossing and debossing can follow your shape. A debossed logo on a die cut kraft tag is a quiet, tactile combination.
Want the shape and finish in one premium tag? Pair it with the coating on our soft-touch silk finish hang tags for a velvet feel.
Errors that cost a reprint
Most die cut problems trace back to artwork that ignores the cut. We flag these on the proof, but it helps to know them before you design.
Background color must run past the cut line on every side. Otherwise a thin white edge shows wherever the cut lands slightly off.
If your tag only needs softer corners, not a full shape, rounded corner hang tags are a simpler choice.
- Text or logo placed right against the cut line
- No bleed beyond the outline
- Inside cutouts so close together the board tears
- A hole placed in a narrow part of the shape
- Very fine points on thick double-layered board
From outline sketch to finished tags
Die cut tags take the same time to produce as standard tags. The difference is that you approve the cut line as well as the print.
If you have a launch date, allow time for proof rounds on the shape. Simple outlines settle quickly, while detailed logos may need an extra round.
- Send your logo or shape idea, the size you want and your stock choice.
- Our designers draw the cut line and place the artwork and hole.
- You get a free digital proof that shows the cut line over the print.
- Request changes until the shape and layout look right.
- Approve the proof, and production takes 4 to 6 business days.
- Tags ship free and arrive in 2 to 3 business days.

Your cutting die is made for your design, so a reorder of the same shape is simple to set up. Only the artwork needs a new proof if it changes.
Send your shape and quantities to get a die cut tag quote. Shipping is free to the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and misprints reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.
