Where a tie-on tag beats a sticker

Adhesive labels need a flat, clean, dry surface. Plenty of shipments do not have one.

Burlap sacks, wrapped bundles, wire baskets, cloth bags and string-tied gift boxes all take a tag better than a label. A tag also lifts off without leaving glue on a box the customer wants to keep.

Shipping tags have a long history on parcels for a reason. They are simple, they stay visible, and they can be read from any side of the package.

Tags also work in cold rooms and damp stockrooms where label glue struggles to grip. String does not care if the surface is dusty or curved.

Businesses that use shipping tags

Most of our shipping tag orders come from small brands that want the outside of the parcel to look as considered as the inside. Others need a practical way to mark bundles in a stockroom or at a market stall.

Shipping tags sit alongside our sale, product and shipping tag range, so you can match styles across your store and your packing table.

A tag with your logo also turns a plain brown parcel into something people photograph. That is free exposure every time an order lands.

  • Coffee roasters tying tags to bean sacks
  • Bakeries tagging boxed cakes and gift hampers
  • Florists and plant sellers tagging wrapped orders
  • Ecommerce brands tying a tag to a kraft mailer
  • Wholesale suppliers marking cartons and bundles
  • Event planners tagging welcome bags and guest boxes

What to print and what to leave blank

Think about which details stay the same on every parcel and which change. Print the fixed details. Leave lined space for the rest.

Your logo, return address and a short handling note never change, so they belong in print. The recipient, order number and contents change each time, so they need writing lines.

The back can carry a thank you, a care note or a code that links to reorder details.

If you ship internationally, a short printed line for a customs reference or phone number saves writing it every time.

Thickness and stock for a rough journey

A shipping tag gets pulled, bent and stacked under other parcels. Thin stock tears at the hole and creases across the address.

For parcels, 24 pt cardstock is a solid starting point. For heavy sacks or cartons on a pallet, 32 pt double-layered board holds up better and feels sturdy in the hand.

Kraft board is the classic look for a shipping tag. Recycled-content stock suits brands that want the tag to match their recycled mailers, and our custom kraft hang tags show how the brown board prints.

If your parcels sit outside on a porch, lamination on the printed side helps protect the ink from scuffs.

Why the grommet matters

The hole is the weak point of any tag. On a parcel, the string takes the full weight of every tug and snag.

A metal grommet spreads that strain around the rim of the hole. It stops the string from cutting through the board on a long trip.

Grommets also help when tags are reused. A wholesale customer can untie and retie a grommet tag many times without the hole stretching out.

For light gift parcels, a plain punched hole is usually enough.

Place the grommet hole near the top edge, centered between the clipped corners. That keeps the tag hanging straight with the address facing out.

Writing surfaces that take ink

If your team writes addresses by hand, skip gloss lamination on the writing side. Ballpoint skips on it and marker smears.

Uncoated cardstock and uncoated kraft both take ballpoint, gel pen and permanent marker well. If you want lamination for the printed front, ask for it on one side only.

Thermal printer labels can also be stuck onto a blank area of the tag. Leave a clear rectangle sized to your label roll if that is your workflow.

Ask us to print the lines in a light gray or a soft brand tint. Handwriting then stands out clearly against them.

String, elastic and pre-strung tags

Cotton string looks neat on gift parcels. Jute string adds a rustic look and grips well on burlap and kraft paper.

Elastic loops are quicker for jars, tins and rolled items, because they stretch over the item with no knot. Our notes on tying and looping tags onto items show each method.

Pre-strung tags save real time at the packing table. Your team pulls a tag from the box, writes the address and ties it on.

Tell us roughly how thick your bundles are. That lets us suggest a string length that ties with a proper knot and a little spare.

Ordering custom shipping tags

Start with your logo, an idea of size and how many parcels you send in a typical month. You can price your shipping tags here and our team replies with options.

  1. Send your artwork, tag size, stock and quantity.
  2. Pick grommet or plain hole, and string or elastic.
  3. Receive a quote matched to those choices.
  4. Check the free digital proof, including write-on line spacing.
  5. Have us adjust the line spacing or wording as many rounds as needed, then sign off.
  6. We print in 4 to 6 business days and ship free, arriving in 2 to 3 business days.

Packing table mistakes to avoid

Most shipping tag problems show up on the first busy day of packing. A quick check on the proof prevents them.

Our designers look for each of these on your file. You will see any suggested fixes marked on the proof.

  • Write-on lines spaced too tightly for real handwriting
  • Gloss lamination on the side staff need to write on
  • A plain hole on heavy sacks that tears in transit
  • Return address printed too small to read at a glance
  • No room left for a thermal label when you use one
  • String length too short to tie around a thick bundle

Using shipping tags as gift and event tags

The same shape works well beyond shipping. A branded shipping tag on a gift box looks intentional and timeless.

Wedding planners and event teams use them as name tags on welcome bags. Retailers tie them to hampers during the holidays.

If you want a plainer item tag for the products inside the parcel, our printed product tags can share your shipping tag's colors and fonts.

For events, leave the name line blank and add a printed date or theme on the back. One design then works for every guest.

Delivery of your tags and print guarantee

Your shipping tags travel to you free in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. They come packed flat, with pre-strung tags bundled so the strings stay neat.

A misprint or damage in transit is covered if you report it within 10 days. Details are in our return and reprint policy.

Running low? Reorders reuse your approved proof, so you only confirm quantity and any changes.

If your parcel volume jumps before a holiday, order your next batch early. Allow time for the proof, then 4 to 6 business days of printing.
