Why order tags with the string already on
Threading string through hundreds of tags is slow work. It is also where tagging goes wrong, with uneven lengths, loose knots and tangles.
Pre-strung tags remove that step. You open the box, loop the string around the product and tie it. Your packing table spends its time packing instead of threading.
This matters most for small teams. Bakeries, makers and online shops rarely have spare staff to sit and thread tags before a busy weekend.
Choosing the string
The string sets the tone as much as the print does. A rough jute twine says handmade, and a satin ribbon says gift.
A plain cotton string stays neutral. It lets the tag artwork do the talking.
Match the string to how the product is handled. Jute is strong but can shed fibers on dark fabric. Cotton is soft and clean.
Elastic slips over jars and bottles with no knot at all. Ribbon takes longer to tie but looks finished on a gift.
| String | Look and feel | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton string | Soft, clean, neutral | Clothing, accessories, gift boxes |
| Jute twine | Rough, natural, rustic | Bakery bags, plants, kraft tags |
| Elastic loop | Stretchy, no knot needed | Jars, candles, small bottles |
| Satin ribbon | Smooth with a slight sheen | Gift sets, boutique items |
Getting the string length right
Too short and the string will not reach around the product. Too long and the tag dangles, flips over and tangles with its neighbors.
Measure what the string has to go around, then add a few inches for the knot. For a jar lid, that might be a short loop. For a bread bag or a bundle of towels, it may be much longer.
Ribbon and elastic behave differently from cotton. Elastic stretches, so you can order it shorter than the measured loop.
If you tag several products, you can order more than one string length in the same job. We note each length on your proof.
- Measure around the part of the product the string will wrap.
- Add about three inches for tying the knot.
- Decide whether the tag should hang close or dangle lower.
- Tell us the final length for each product you tag.
- Check the lengths on the proof before you approve it.
Knot styles for pre-strung tags
Pre-strung tags usually come with the string looped through the hole and knotted at the ends. You then slip the loop over the product or tie it on.
A loop through the hole, sometimes called a lark's head, keeps the tag snug and centered. A single knot at the free ends leaves both strands open, ready to tie around a bag or a bundle.
Elastic loops need no knot at all on your side. They are joined before shipping, so you just stretch them over the product.
Tell us how you will put the tag on. We will suggest the knot that saves you the most time. Our guide to attaching tags with string and pins shows each style.
Paper choices that hold a string
The paper has to resist the pull of the string. Thin paper tears at the hole when a shopper tugs the tag.
For most products, 16 pt or 18 pt cardstock is the right balance. For heavy items like bags or denim, choose 24 pt or 32 pt, or add a metal eyelet to protect the hole.
Textured uncoated stock pairs well with cotton string. Both have a soft, matte look that suits boutique goods.
Kraft board is popular with jute twine since both have a natural look. For full color photos or bright brand colors, coated cardstock prints sharper. See our guide to papers and finishes for more.
When a metal eyelet is worth it
An eyelet is a small metal ring set into the punched hole. It stops the string from cutting through the paper.
It is worth adding on heavy products, items that get tried on, and tags that ship loose in mailers. On light food bags or favors, a plain punched hole is usually enough.
Eyelets also add a finished look. Gold or silver eyelets on a dark tag suit boutique goods.
Eyelets come in a few metal tones. Pick one that echoes your logo or hardware on the product, such as a zipper or buckle.
Who uses pre-strung paper tags
Clothing brands tie them to garment loops or buttonholes. Bakeries wrap them around bread bags and cake boxes. Candle and soap makers loop them around jars and bars.
Gift shops and florists use them on wrapped items and bouquets. Online sellers like them because they go on fast during packing and stay attached in transit.
Seasonal pop-up shops order them too, since they need to tag a lot of stock in a short window.
For apparel in particular, our custom clothing hang tags page covers garment-specific sizes and content.
- Apparel and accessories
- Bakery bags and treat boxes
- Candles, soaps and jars
- Gift wrap, hampers and bouquets
- Handmade goods sold online or at markets
Designing around the hole and string
The hole and the string sit on top of your artwork, so plan for them. Keep text and logos at least a quarter inch away from the hole.
Most tags have the hole at the top center. Some designs look better with the hole in a top corner, which makes the tag hang at an angle. Your proof shows the exact hole position.
If the string is dark and your tag is dark, the string can disappear. Pick a string color that contrasts with the tag, or matches a color in your logo.
Want to try layouts before you send files? You can design your tag layout online and mark where the hole should go.
Mistakes to avoid
These come up often on first orders of pre-strung tags. Each one costs time at the packing table.
Before a big order, ask us to quote two string lengths. Tie a few sample products with each and keep the one that looks tidiest. Our hang tag size chart also helps you match tag size to string length.
- One string length ordered for products of very different sizes
- Jute twine used on dark clothing, where fibers show
- Thin paper on heavy products, so tags tear at the hole
- Text placed too close to the punched hole
- Loose strings ordered when a pre-tied loop would save hours
Storing pre-strung tags
Strings tangle if tags are dumped loose in a bin. Keep them in the bundles they ship in until you need them.
Pull tags from the top of a bundle one at a time. Store boxes flat in a dry place so the paper stays flat and the strings stay clean.
Elastic loops can lose stretch in strong heat or sun. Keep those tags out of hot vans and sunny windows.
If you also use stickers to seal strings to the back of a tag, our custom hang tag stickers can be printed to match.
